Alabama State Picks Up A Win In HBCU Hoops

Alabama St 75, Fort Valley State 68.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – Demetrius Houston and Torloft Thomas each converted two clutch free throws in the final two minutes as Alabama State held on to beat Division II Fort Valley State, 75-68 Thursday in the Hornets final tune-up before opening Southwestern Conference play Monday.

J.R. Bryant knocked down a 3-pointer with 3:51 left to give Fort Valley State a 66-65 lead, but Houston put Alabama State in front for good with a jumper with 3:20 left as Alabama State won for just the second time in a dozen starts.

Tony Armstrong scored 16 points on 6 of 7 shooting from the field and Houston was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field to add 15. Rodney Simeon added 11 points for Alabama State (2-10).

Alabama State opens Southwestern Conference play Monday when the Hornets play host to Grambling State.

James Barnes scored 14 points to lead Fort Valley State.
Cal State Northridge 82, Morgan State 61.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Kendall Smith scored 19 points and Cal State Northridge built an insurmountable early lead and cruised in the second half to an 82-61 win over Morgan State on Thursday night.

Tavrion Dawson had 16 points while Aaron Parks and Rakim Lubin each added 12 for the Matadors (4-9), who snapped a four-game losing streak.

Cal State Northridge did not make a 3-pointer, finishing 0 of 3, but did shoot an efficient 57. 4 percent overall and reached the free-throw line 32 times.

Phillip Carr scored a game-high 25 points for Morgan State (3-10), which has lost four straight. David Syfax and Kyle Thomas were the only other Bears to score more than five points, finishing with 11 and 10, respectively.

Cal State Northridge scored the first eight points and led 17-6 after seven minutes. Two Kendall Smith free throws gave the Matadors a 20-point lead at the break and they cruised from there.

Hawaii 77, Delaware State 66.

HONOLULU (AP) – Jack Purchase made five 3-pointers and scored 21 points to help Hawaii beat Delaware State 77-66 on Thursday night.

Purchase made Hawaii’s sixth 3-pointer of the first half with 9:38 left for a 24-19 lead and the Rainbow Warriors took their first double-digit lead with less than two minutes left on Ido Flaisher’s putback. Hawaii had a 41-27 lead at the break after making 9 of 20 from beyond the arc.

Purchase tied his career high with 21 on a layup with 3:45 left to extend Hawaii’s lead to 68-52. The Rainbow Warriors only made one 3 in the second half but led by as many as 20.

Sheriff Drammeh added 12 points and Leland Green scored 11 for Hawaii (6-7). Purchase also grabbed eight boards to help Hawaii outrebound Delaware State 35-21.

Devin Morgan hit four 3s and scored 26 points and DeAndre Haywood added 16 points for Delaware State (3-12), which lost its fourth straight.
Western Michigan 80, Alabama A&M 50

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) – Thomas Wilder finished with 19 points and Western Michigan snapped a short two-game losing streak with a dominating 80-50 win over Alabama A&M on Thursday night.

The game was the last non-conference matchup for both teams, each of whom opens conference play next week.

Josh Davis scored 12 points off the bench and Tucker Haymond added 11 and eight rebounds for the Broncos (4-8), who held the Bulldogs to just 36.5 percent shooting, outrebounded them by 21 (45-24), and forced them into 15 turnovers.

Rakiya Battle led Alabama A&M (0-11) with 17 points. The Bulldogs have lost 12 straight dating back to last season.

Western Michigan built a 14-point lead at the half and started the second with an 8-0 run, capped by a Brandon Johnson 3-point play, for a 44-22 lead.

The Bulldogs never got back within 20 points.
