Sexual violence during slavery had a lasting impact on black families. It created two classes of slaves, those who lived in the house and those who only lived and worked in the fields.

The house slave usually had lighter skin because they were generally the off spring of the master. The field slaves had a much harder time and usually darker skin.

This impact of rape on black women basically created a “Post Traumatic Slavery Syndrome” that still exists today. But in 1831 both classes of black women were very much a part of the Revolt staged by Nat Turner.   I refer to them as Women of the Revolution and they were powerful!
