After graduating from the University of Wisconsin, McAlpin moved to Washington, DC where he worked for the Washington Tribune, a Black weekly newspaper. He held various other gigs including insurance and two federal positions while in law school. McAlpin became an assistant to Mary McLeod Bethune while writing part-time for the Chicago Defender. The National Negro Publishers Association NNPA petitioned the White House Correspondents Association (WHCA) for credentials in 1943, which at the time limited White House access to daily papers. On February 8, 1944 McAlpin attended his first presidential press conference and was greeted by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who shook his and said “I’m glad to see you, McAlpin, and very happy to have you here.” After his tenure with the NNPA, McAlpin moved to Louisville, Kentucky, where he served as the only Black assistant commonwealth attorney, followed by heading the Louisville chapter of the @naacp.

The WHCA posthumously honored Harry S. McAlpin in 2014, creating a scholarship in his memory. President Barack Obama noted McAlpin’s pioneering journalism.
