“The president and first lady believe it is important to show their support for the community during this devastating time and to be there for the families of the victims,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated during a recent White House briefing.

“The president and the first lady will travel to Uvalde to grieve with the community that lost 21 lives in the horrific elementary school shooting.”

During the briefing, Jean-Pierre also called on Congress to pass comprehensive gun reform legislation, and on the topic of the NRA holding its annual convention in Houston this weekend, the press secretary had some strong words.

“They represent the interest of the gun industry, the gun manufacturers who are marketing weapons of war to young adults. If more guns were indeed the solution, we would be the safest country in the world, but we are not.”
