(AURN News) – A federal court has delivered a seismic blow to President Donald Trump’s push to lock in Republican control of Congress by blocking Texas’ new congressional map.
The ruling, handed down by a three-judge panel, halts a redistricting plan that would give Republicans an edge in 30 of 38 districts while diminishing the voting power of Black and Latino communities.
Judge Jeffrey Brown, a Trump appointee, wrote that substantial evidence shows Texas racially gerrymandered the 2025 map. The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law added that it is a clear violation of the Constitution to design a plan that purposefully dismantles districts where Black and brown voters together are a majority.
Gov. Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton have already appealed to the Supreme Court, but with candidate deadlines just weeks away, time may not be on their side.
