William Arthur Lewis, Nobel Economist, Born Jan. 23, 1915

(AURN NEWS) โ€” On this day, Jan. 23, 1915, William Arthur Lewis was born in St. Lucia.

He became one of the worldโ€™s most influential economists, celebrated for shaping modern thinking on economic development.

Lewis earned a bachelor of science degree in 1937 and completed his doctorate three years later at the London School of Economics, where he worked until 1948.

After Ghana gained independence in 1957, he served as the nationโ€™s first economic adviser and helped create its development plan. In 1959, he was appointed vice chancellor of the University of the West Indies.

Lewis was knighted in 1963 and later became a professor of economics at Princeton University, teaching there until retiring in 1983.

In 1979, he won the Nobel Prize in Economics. He died in 1991.
