WASHINGTON (AURN News) — Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., filed a resolution Thursday aimed at Congress’ most established minority caucuses: the Congressional Black Caucus, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, along with more than a dozen ethnic staff associations representing both Democrats and Republicans.
Her resolution would direct the House Administration Committee to revoke official recognition from any member or staff organization built primarily around race, ethnicity or national origin. In a news release announcing the measure, Mace argued the groups promote exclusion rather than genuine diversity efforts.
Leaders of the affected caucuses, along with House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, pushed back, defending lawmakers’ right to organize around the communities they represent and rejecting the comparison to segregation.
The proposal comes as redistricting in several Southern states has already reduced the Congressional Black Caucus’ membership this year.
