WASHINGTON (AURN News) — Dr. Anthony Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment right and refused to answer lawmakers’ questions this morning during a high-stakes Senate hearing into the origins of COVID-19.
The former top infectious disease official appeared before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, chaired by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., a longtime Fauci critic who has publicly called for him to end up “behind bars.”
The hearing follows Paul’s release of more than 1,000 pages of Fauci’s private pandemic-era diaries, which he says expose contradictions between what Fauci wrote privately and what he told the public.
Fauci’s legal team says he’s invoking the Fifth Amendment to avoid a possible perjury charge, noting his 2025 pardon from former President Joe Biden would not protect him from future prosecutions.
In his opening statement, Fauci accused Paul of an “unhinged obsession” with prosecuting him.
