(AURN News) — Legendary costume and fashion designer Bob Mackie has died at 87, according to The New York Times.
For more than half a century, Mackie created some of entertainment’s most unforgettable looks, dressing Black icons including Diana Ross, Tina Turner, RuPaul and Whitney Houston, along with stars such as Carol Burnett, Elton John and, most famously, Cher.
His dazzling designs were known for sequins, rhinestones, feathers, dramatic silhouettes and unapologetic glamour.
Mackie’s work with Cher became iconic, beginning with “The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour” and continuing across decades of television, concerts and red carpets.
He also earned Oscar nominations for his costume work, including “Lady Sings the Blues,” starring Diana Ross, and won multiple Emmys and a Tony Award.
Mackie’s influence extended far beyond costumes, helping define how generations of performers presented themselves onstage and turning spectacle, camp and glamour into an unmistakable language.
