(AURN News) — The National Museum of African American History and Culture marked its 10th anniversary this month.
The Smithsonian museum celebrated the milestone in Washington with educational events, community programs and a focus on its future, The Associated Press reported.
The museum opened Sept. 24, 2016, after decades of advocacy for a national institution honoring Black history.
Since then, the museum has welcomed nearly 14 million visitors from 200 countries and hosted more than 26,000 school groups.
The anniversary comes as the museum faces pressure from President Donald Trump’s administration, which has sought changes to Smithsonian museums and other federally supported historical sites.
Museum leaders say the institution’s exhibits, language and mission remain unchanged and grounded in scholarship.
Acting Director Shanita Brackett said the museum will continue presenting African American history as an essential part of the broader American story.
