(AURN News) — James L. “Mr. V” Virgil, a well-known Atlanta entrepreneur and nightlife pioneer, died Sept. 7, 2026, at age 85, according to 11Alive News.
Virgil founded Mr. V’s Figure 8, a popular Black-owned nightclub that operated from 1978 to 1987 and became a major part of Atlanta’s cultural scene.
The club attracted celebrities including Muhammad Ali, Tina Turner, Eddie Murphy, Gladys Knight, Rick James, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Evander Holyfield.
Former Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson was also a regular and became a close friend of Virgil.
Millie Jackson recorded a live album at the club.
Virgil later operated Mr. V’s Restaurant Equipment and helped minority restaurant owners gain access to equipment, guidance and business networks.
In 2019, he received the Heritage Award from the Georgia Minority Business Awards for his impact on Atlanta’s business community.
