President Biden is announcing new actions to reduce gun violence in Monterey Park, California, today. He’ll sign an executive order aimed at increasing the number of background checks conducted before firearm sales, moving the U.S. closer to universal background checks with additional legislation.

The order will also focus on keeping more guns out of dangerous hands by increasing the effective use of red flag laws, strengthening efforts to hold the gun industry accountable, and accelerating law enforcement efforts to identify and apprehend shooters. Moreover, the president is encouraging the Federal Trade Commission to analyze how gun manufacturers market firearms to minors.

When he is in Monterey Park, he’ll travel to grieve with families and communities impacted by the mass shooting that claimed 11 lives and injured nine others in January.

Last year, the president signed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the most significant gun violence reduction legislation enacted in nearly 30 years.
