To celebrate Black Music Month, AURN is turning up the volume with a special tribute to iconic artists across genres and generations — and it’s all going down in a head-to-head “Versuz” bracket-style showdown.
The bracket pits music legends and contemporary chart-toppers against each other in friendly matchups that spark conversation, nostalgia, and a whole lot of fan loyalty. From hip-hop to R&B, and soul to pop, the lineup is stacked with talent that has shaped the sound of Black America — and the world.
The Left Side of the Bracket: Hip-Hop Heavyweights
Representing the world of hip-hop, the left side of the bracket opens with a clash of titans: Jay-Z vs. Nas, rekindling one of rap’s most famous rivalries. In the next matchup, Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion face off in a battle of modern rap royalty.
The rising star category features Doechii vs. Latto, showcasing the future of female rap. And rounding out the left side is a heavyweight historical matchup: Biggie vs. Tupac, a debate that has defined hip-hop culture for decades.
The Right Side: Soul, R&B, and Pop Royalty
On the right, it’s all about powerhouse vocals and legendary performances. Aretha Franklin takes on Whitney Houston, both known for redefining what it means to sing with soul. Then, it’s a generational pop clash between Beyoncé and Janet Jackson — two global icons with unmatched stage presence.
Michael Jackson vs. Prince is another face-off of seismic proportions — a matchup between two of the most innovative performers in music history. And to top it off, it’s a diva showdown with Mariah Carey vs. Brandy, a battle between vocal agility and soulful depth.
Let the People Decide
Fans are encouraged to weigh in on each matchup via AURN’s social channels throughout June. The winners will advance through the bracket, with one ultimate champion crowned at the end of Black Music Month.
No matter who wins, this Versuz celebration is a reminder of the incredible influence of Black artists and the enduring power of their music.
