Less than a day after Vice President Kamala Harris announced her presidential bid, some Republicans targeted her race in their critiques. Tennessee Republican Rep. Tim Burchett, in a CNN interview, asserted that President Joe Biden chose Harris as his running mate solely because she is Black, calling her “a DEI hire” and disparaging her record.

The remarks prompted immediate backlash, with many condemning them as perpetuating racist stereotypes about Black women.

Harris’ qualifications are substantial, with a career spanning over two decades as a prosecutor, her tenure as San Francisco’s district attorney, and later California’s attorney general. She then made history as California’s first Black and South Asian U.S. senator before being elected vice president in 2020.
