Hollywood Live: RIP Harry Belafonte

It was my pleasure to have met and known the great Harry Belafonte who passed away at age 96. There will be a lot of stories about this champion for justice who just also happened to be a great entertainer.

A little over 15 years ago, I decided to run into Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills to pick up a few needed things. As I approached the front door, there were these two tall, handsome men dressed to the nines. I realized it was Danny Glover and Harry Belafonte.

They saw me and immediately grabbed me up in hugs as we walked into the store together. As we approached the escalator, I realized every single person on that floor had stopped what they were doing and had their gaze fixed on these three Black folks riding the escalator. I got off on the third floor, while Danny and Harry were going to the men’s department on four.

As I exited the escalator, people actually grabbed me and asked, “You know them?”

It was my pleasure to have met and known the great Harry Belafonte who passed away at age 96. There will be a lot of stories about this champion for justice who just also happened to be a great entertainer. Mr. Belafonte, rest in peace and power.
