CHICAGO (AURN News) — Chants of “Justice for Nolan Wells” echoed through the NAACP National Convention in Chicago on Tuesday as attorney Ben Crump released the findings of an independent autopsy into the death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells.
“Cause of death: undetermined,” Crump said, citing the findings of forensic pathologist Dr. Roger A. Mitchell Jr.’s independent autopsy.
Mitchell found red discoloration on the back of Wells’ head but could not determine its cause. Part of Wells’ throat, including his trachea, was missing from the body when he received it for examination, meaning he could not rule out a neck injury or foul play as a factor.
The independent autopsy findings contradict an earlier statement by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department that Wells appeared to have accidentally drowned before a full investigation had been completed.
Crump is now calling on the state to release its investigative findings and allow Mitchell to participate when the case goes before a Mississippi grand jury.
The family says they just want the truth about what happened to their son.
