WASHINGTON (AURN News) — Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., returned home Thursday, nearly eight weeks after a fall landed him in the hospital.
The 84-year-old senator was hospitalized in mid-June after a fall that left him briefly unconscious. He was also treated for pneumonia during his recovery.
In a statement Thursday, McConnell said he had been discharged from the rehabilitation center and thanked his doctors, nurses and the people of Kentucky for their support.
But McConnell’s recovery unfolded under significant political pressure.
McConnell cast no votes during his 53-day absence, while Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, a Democrat, publicly called for greater transparency and urged McConnell to demonstrate that he was fit to serve or resign.
McConnell said he would continue physical therapy at home while remaining engaged in Senate work.
It is not yet clear when McConnell will return to Capitol Hill.
