WASHINGTON (AURN News) — After federal monitors appeared at polling locations in Massachusetts, the NAACP wants to know what the Department of Justice is planning for November.
The civil rights organization has filed a Freedom of Information Act request seeking information about the DOJ’s proposed deployment of more than 1,000 personnel during the midterms.
The request follows federal monitoring during primary elections in several states. The DOJ also requested voter and polling information from officials in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
Now the NAACP is seeking the planned locations, monitors’ qualifications and training, and the legal authority allowing the Civil Rights Division to investigate alleged voter fraud. It also wants to know how federal personnel will comply with state restrictions inside polling places.
The DOJ says the operation is meant to strengthen election security and transparency, while the NAACP warns that a program historically used to protect voting rights could instead intimidate voters.
