WNBA star Brittney Griner is being sent to a penal colony after a Russian judge rejected her attorney’s request for an appeal to her nine-year sentence for smuggling drugs. The charges were reduced slightly and will count the time she spent in pretrial detention. Her attorneys insist that the sentence is disproportionate.

In a statement from National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, he says Griner continues to be wrongfully detained under intolerable circumstances after having to undergo another sham judicial proceeding.

He also says the Biden administration continues to engage with Russia through every available channel and makes every effort to bring home Brittney. As well as to support and advocate for other Americans detained in Russia.

During a White House COVID event, the president was asked about how the administration will move forward. President Biden said he is in “constant contact with Russian authorities to get Brittney and others out.”

“So far, we have not been meeting with much response. We’re not stopping,” the president concluded.
