First, they were fired. Now they’re being begged to come back. The Trump administration is quietly reversing course, rehiring hundreds of federal workers it laid off just months ago in a sweeping purge led by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
From the CDC to the National Weather Service, the damage was deep, and it crippled public health, safety and emergency services.
At the CDC alone, 450 workers were reinstated. The National Weather Service has permission to hire 125 meteorologists, despite a hiring freeze, as hurricane season looms.
Critics are calling the move from the Trump administration dangerously incompetent. They cite cuts to coal mine safety inspectors, food lab scientists and disease specialists in the name of efficiency.
Some may say that’s not smart government — it’s a national risk.
Whether the administration will publicly acknowledge the reversal remains to be seen.
