WASHINGTON (AURN News) — House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries is joining the Rev. Al Sharpton, Martin Luther King III and Arndrea Waters King for Friday’s Defend the Vote March.
The demonstration comes 63 years after the historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, and organizers say this gathering is about protecting political power, not simply remembering the past.
Jeffries will address threats to voting and civil rights as Black communities confront restrictive election laws, weakened federal protections and congressional maps that could reduce their representation.
The march brings together civil rights, labor and faith leaders, including the NAACP, National Urban League, National Council of Negro Women and several major unions.
Thousands are expected at the Lincoln Memorial, where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963.
This time, the central demand is clear: defend the ballot before more rights disappear.
