(AURN News) — Several of AI’s biggest names called for slowing the development of increasingly powerful systems over the weekend, while President Donald Trump pushed back on those warnings.
“We’re leading China in AI. We’re the most sophisticated country in the world, and frankly I want to keep it that way because whoever wins AI wins,” Trump said. “We could put guardrails. We can do this and that. But I think you have a lot of very negative forces that are bringing it up that shouldn’t be bringing it up and they’re bringing up things that won’t happen.”
Trump made the remarks Sunday at his golf course in Ireland after being asked whether the AI industry should slow down or face more regulation.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay Saturday calling on AI companies to slow the pace of developing increasingly powerful models, and several prominent industry rivals agreed. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and xAI CEO Elon Musk both backed Amodei’s call to slow AI development.
Trump said guardrails could be considered, but he accused “very negative forces” of raising concerns about threats that, in his words, “won’t happen.”
On ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., said Congress should “act urgently” to address the challenges posed by AI.
