(AURN News) — R&B singer Freddie Jackson, best known for the 1985 hit “You Are My Lady,” died Monday night at 70, his family announced, according to NBC News.
Jackson became one of the defining romantic voices of 1980s R&B, earning two Grammy nominations along with platinum and gold records.
Born and raised in Harlem, Jackson began singing gospel before building a career around smooth ballads that became staples at weddings and celebrations.
No cause of death was announced. In 2024, Jackson revealed that he had been diagnosed with kidney disease and partnered with the National Kidney Foundation to raise awareness.
His family remembered him as a generous person who deeply loved his fans, family, friends and music. The National Kidney Foundation also paid tribute, saying Jackson’s openness about his illness touched many lives.
Jackson’s career included several major R&B hits, and his music helped define an era of sophisticated soul.
