More Than 5 Million Lose SNAP Benefits, Including an Estimated 2 Million Children

(AURN News) — More than 5 million fewer Americans are receiving federal grocery assistance than in July 2025, and researchers say an improving economy is unlikely to explain the decline.

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities reports that SNAP participation fell 13% between July 2025 and June 2026, reaching its lowest level in 17 years.

The center estimates that about 2 million children are among those no longer receiving SNAP benefits.

The center says sweeping SNAP cuts enacted by Republicans in July 2025 likely accelerated the decline. It cited tighter eligibility rules and pressure on states to reduce costs as likely contributing factors.

The law doesn’t explain the entire decline. Another squeeze is coming. Most states are scheduled to begin paying a share of SNAP benefit costs in October 2027.

The center is urging Congress to delay the change, warning that more families could lose access to food assistance.
