Trump Pushed to Redraw the Lines. Democrats Took the House Anyway.

Latest

WASHINGTON (AURN News) — Republicans hoped to gain up to 16 House seats by redrawing congressional maps in eight states, according to The Associated Press.

President Donald Trump pushed for new district lines to help his party keep the House. Democrats won control anyway.

In Texas, Republicans picked up one of the five U.S. House seats their new map was designed to flip. They lost two seats they already held. In Alabama, U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures won reelection after the Supreme Court let the state use a map Republicans thought would help them beat him. The National Democratic Redistricting Committee credits a push led by former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder that included legal challenges and support for California’s Proposition 50.

Now the group wants Congress to ban partisan gerrymandering and stop states from redrawing congressional districts in the middle of the decade.
