According to a recent survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, Americans hold mixed opinions about the potential uses of AI in workplaces. While some express wariness and concern, there are also instances where people believe AI could outperform humans.
The survey reveals that a significant majority opposes AI being used in making final hiring decisions and in making firing decisions. Americans also oppose AI use in reviewing job applications and determining promotions.
Those surveyed are also worried about AI systems tracking their movements or monitoring their desk presence. However, when it comes to evaluating all job applicants equally, 47% believe AI would excel compared to humans. And among those who see bias as a problem in performance evaluations, more believe that increased AI use by employers would improve rather than worsen the hiring and evaluation process.
A majority of Americans anticipate a significant impact of AI on workers in general over the next two decades, but fewer believe it will have a major impact on them personally.
