WASHINGTON (AURN News) — Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., says he will support Todd Blanche for attorney general, providing the crucial vote Blanche needs to advance his nomination.
“I will vote for Mr. Blanche. I’ll be criticized for this vote. What’s new? But people of Louisiana can be assured that I worked hard to understand the issue and to make the right decision,” Cassidy said.
Two Republican senators, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, opposed Blanche’s nomination. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., was absent, leaving Cassidy in a pivotal position despite his own reservations about the nominee and the Justice Department.
Cassidy’s support clears a major obstacle between Blanche and the top law enforcement job in the country.
Blanche has already faced scrutiny over his push for a $1.8 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund,” which he backed away from as his confirmation came into question.
Blanche has also faced criticism over the Justice Department’s handling of the Epstein files and the release of related documents.
