WASHINGTON (AURN News) — The Congressional Black Caucus is demanding an independent federal review into the disappearance and death of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells. In a letter to Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel, lawmakers said Wells’ family has waited more than a month for basic answers and should not be forced to grieve in an information vacuum.
Wells disappeared during a Fourth of July boat trip to Horn Island, Mississippi, and his body was found two days later.
An independent autopsy classified both the cause and manner of Wells’ death as undetermined, while findings from the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office have not yet been publicly released.
The FBI is already assisting local investigators.
Now the CBC wants the Justice Department to determine whether a separate federal investigation, including a possible civil rights investigation, is warranted.
Lawmakers gave DOJ seven days to explain what action it has taken or intends to take.
