Former FBI director James Comey reportedly created records of interactions he had with President Trump which he deemed “improper efforts to influence an ongoing investigation,” according to a New York Times report on Tuesday.
As part of that paper trail, Comey had written a memo after a meeting he had with the president in February, officials told the Times. During that meeting, the president asked him to drop the ongoing FBI investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn, Comey’s memo said.
“He is a good guy,” Trump told Comey, according to the memo. “I hope you can let this go.”
Flynn was forced to resign from his position as national security adviser when it emerged that he had misled Vice President Pence about contacts he’d had with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Comey’s memo on his February meeting with Trump was two pages long and highly detailed, officials told the Washington Post. He rose to public prominence in 2004, when he served as acting attorney general in the Bush administration. In March of that year, Comey had a showdown with Bush White House aides when he refused to sign off on a National Security Agency surveillance program that he and Justice Department officials believed broke the law.
