On Oct. 20, DC City Council held a public hearing for the Internet Equity Amendment Act of 2021, a bill introduced to help bridge the digital divide in Washington. The divide mostly affects Wards 5, 7, and 8 as less than 65% of households have broadband access. The bill requires that all District residents have a high-speed internet connection as the need for reliable internet has increased due to virtual life exacerbated by the pandemic.
The bill introduced by the Committee on Government Operations & Facilities has garnered strong community support and is still under council review.
