FAMU Students Protest Campus Police Partnership With ICE

Latest

(AURN News) — Student organizers at Florida A&M University want campus police to end their partnership with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Today, they’re taking that demand to homecoming. Students for a Democratic Society announced a noon protest outside the Al Lawson Center, where organizers say the university’s homecoming convocation is taking place.

They’re demanding that FAMU end its 287(g) agreement, which authorizes trained campus police officers to perform certain immigration enforcement duties under ICE supervision. The program’s task force model allows officers to exercise limited immigration enforcement authority during routine police work.

Organizers at the historically Black university say ending the partnership would help protect every student. Immigrant rights and community groups are also listed as participants in the protest announcement.

The university has not put out a response yet.
