WASHINGTON (AURN News) — Federal authorities are investigating a series of suspicious letters sent to election offices and congressional offices nationwide. The investigation involves the FBI, U.S. Postal Inspection Service and U.S. Capitol Police and comes less than three weeks before the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
According to internal Capitol Hill notices, several of the letters contained an unidentified white powder. While preliminary tests on some of the letters have thankfully come back negative for dangerous substances, investigators are treating the mailings as a serious threat.
At least one envelope bore a Manhattan return address previously associated with the Democratic Socialists of America. However, the organization denied any involvement in the mailings and said it moved out of the building more than a decade ago.
Law enforcement officials are working to intercept additional letters before they are delivered, although some may still reach their destinations.
For now, congressional staff and election workers are being urged to treat suspicious mailings as potentially hazardous.
