U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is embarking on a mission to Israel to address the mounting alarm over civilian casualties in the ongoing conflict with Gaza. Secretary Blinken pledged to discuss concrete measures to protect civilians during Israel’s bombardment of the enclave, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive plan.

He also commits to addressing the future of Gaza if Hamas is defeated, increasing humanitarian aid, and preventing the conflict from spreading further. He expressed his commitment to securing the release of over 200 hostages held by Hamas, asserting Israel’s right to defend itself while emphasizing the shared responsibility of protecting innocent lives.

The latest conflict erupted when Hamas militants breached the border on October 7th, leading to a tragic loss of life. Israel’s subsequent bombardment of Gaza, home to 2.3 million, has resulted in over 9,000 casualties, including thousands of children and women, according to Gaza health authorities.

Images of devastation have sparked global appeals for restraint and protests worldwide.
