(AURN News) — Twelve years ago today, “How to Get Away with Murder” premiered on ABC, introducing viewers to Viola Davis as the brilliant, complicated defense attorney and law professor Annalise Keating.
Created by Peter Nowalk and produced under Shonda Rhimes’ Shondaland banner, the series became one of ABC’s biggest dramas of the 2010s. It ran for six seasons, from 2014 to 2020, blending legal drama, mystery, murder and soap-opera twists while placing a Black woman at the center of a network thriller.
Davis’ performance made television history. In 2015, she became the first Black woman to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Her portrayal of Annalise was fearless, vulnerable, messy and commanding, expanding what leading Black women could look like on television.
The show also helped strengthen Shondaland’s groundbreaking run of diverse, female-led programming on network TV.
