(AURN News) — Federal immigration officers in Chicago will now be required to wear body cameras. The order comes from U.S. District Judge Sara L. Ellis of the Northern District of Illinois after videos showed ICE agents using tear gas and other forceful tactics against protesters.

Ellis said she’s concerned her previous order banning riot control weapons against peaceful demonstrators is being ignored. The Justice Department argued that the order was based on one-sided media reports and said it cannot distribute cameras immediately. But Ellis said that’s no excuse.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker praised the move, saying ICE has repeatedly misled the public, including after last month’s fatal shooting of a suburban Chicago man.

Earlier this week, Cook County’s chief judge barred ICE from making arrests in and around local courthouses without a warrant.
