Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an immigrant at the center of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, was arrested again after reporting to an ICE officer in Baltimore, Maryland.
His lawyers say the administration plans to deport him to Uganda, a country with which he has no ties, despite Costa Rica offering to accept him legally.
Abrego’s case has become a flashpoint. Earlier this year, he was mistakenly deported to El Salvador despite a judge’s order finding he faced a well-founded fear of violence there.
The government eventually returned Abrego to the United States and charged him with federal smuggling offenses. Prosecutors offered a plea deal: time served, then deportation to Costa Rica. He refused, saying he would not plead guilty to a crime he did not commit.
Now his lawyers are fighting in federal court to stop what they call a campaign of retribution by the Trump administration.
