Labor Day weekend is here, and millions of Americans are packing in one last trip before summer ends.
The American Automobile Association says the top travel destinations are Seattle, Orlando and New York, with Alaska cruises and Florida theme parks also topping the list.
The good news is domestic travel is cheaper this year. Round-trip flights are averaging $720, down 6% from 2024. Hotels are 11% lower, car rentals 3% less, and gas prices remain steady at about $3.30 a gallon — the same as in 2021.
But brace yourself for the road. Transportation data shows the worst travel windows are Friday afternoon through evening and Saturday midday. In cities like New York, Atlanta and Washington, D.C., congestion nearly doubled.
So as you’re headed back, pack some patience.
