Elon Musk is officially stepping back into U.S. politics. The billionaire says he’s launching the “America Party,” challenging what he calls the corrupt two-party system — just two weeks after a dramatic public split with President Donald Trump.
Musk announced the move on his platform X, saying, “You want a new political party and you shall have it!”
But here’s the catch: The party isn’t currently registered with the Federal Election Commission, and Musk, born in South Africa, is ineligible to run for president.
This follows Musk’s departure from the Trump administration, where he served briefly as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), and went on to publicly blast Trump’s massive spending bill for increasing the federal deficit.
The bill stripped green energy incentives crucial to Musk’s company, Tesla.
Trump fired back, calling the new party “ridiculous” and saying Musk has “gone completely off the rails” — warning that the system “is not designed for them” and the new party could bring “complete and total disruption & chaos” to Republicans ahead of the midterms.
He also threatened to pull federal subsidies from Tesla and SpaceX.
