(AURN News) — The NAACP sent 23 staff members to Jackson and Biloxi to help Mississippi voters get their ballots counted in one of the tightest Senate races in the country. Democratic challenger Scott Colom held a narrow lead over Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith as of Friday morning, according to The Associated Press.
The NAACP is helping voters who cast provisional ballots. In Mississippi, they’re called affidavit ballots. If you cast an affidavit ballot because you forgot your photo ID, you have until Tuesday, Nov. 10, to show an acceptable photo ID at your county circuit clerk’s office.
The NAACP says its Mississippi operation registered more than 17,000 voters and knocked on 150,000 doors across 40 counties.
Now the work has shifted from getting people to the polls to helping eligible voters make sure the ballots they already cast are counted.
