On Aug. 25, 2001, the world lost singer and actress Aaliyah in a tragic plane crash in the Bahamas. Just 22 years old, Aaliyah had already transformed R&B with her smooth vocals, innovative sound and hits such as “One in a Million” and “Are You That Somebody?”

Beyond music, she broke barriers in Hollywood with roles in “Romeo Must Die” and “Queen of the Damned.” Known as the “Princess of R&B,” Aaliyah’s influence still echoes through today’s artists who cite her style, artistry and vision as inspiration.
Her death cut short a brilliant career, but her legacy continues to shine, reminding the world of her unmatched talent and grace.
