(AURN News) — Vermont is the safest state in America, according to a new WalletHub report that ranked all 50 states on everything from violent crime to climate disasters.
New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, and Utah round out the top five. The study looked at 52 different safety indicators — not just crime statistics, but also financial security, road conditions, workplace injuries, and disaster preparedness.
Nearly 75 percent of parents in Vermont believe they live in safe neighborhoods, the fourth-highest percentage in the country, according to WalletHub.
“The safest states in America protect their residents from harm in a multitude of different ways, from keeping crime rates low and maintaining safe roadways to having strong economies and job markets that prevent people from falling into dangerous financial situations,” said WalletHub Analyst Chip Lupo.
Lupo noted these states also have high levels of occupational safety and disaster preparedness. “States are made safer by efforts that individual residents take, such as forming a neighborhood watch or working in firefighting and EMT jobs at high rates,” he added.
At the bottom of the rankings were Florida, Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
