Star Trek actress Nichelle Nichols passed away on July 3 at 89

In a social media statement, Nichols’ son Kyle Johnson spoke about his mother’s legacy and impact, writing: “Her light however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration. Hers was a life well lived and as such a model for us all.”

The Hollywood trailblazer was born on December 28, 1932, in Robbins, Illinois, where she would get her start in the entertainment business by performing in musicals and theater plays.

Nichols was also a supporter of NASA and routinely volunteered to help recruit diverse candidates for the agency.
