A new study from the journal Circulation: Heart Failure finds that white people were twice as likely as Black people to receive a heart failure treatment like a transplant or a ventricular assist device.
From July 2015 to June 2016, 377 adults were treated for heart failure, and 27% of the participants were Black. Published on October 19, the data revealed that a heart transplant or a ventricular assist device was performed in only 11% of Black patients. However, 22% of the White patients received the life-saving treatment. The death rate was 18% for Black patients and 13% for white patients.
An author of the study said in a news release, “As physicians and health care providers, we must find ways to create equitable change.”
