(AURN News) — Three years after the Hamas-led Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel, the Middle East is still dealing with what that day set in motion.

The 2023 attack killed about 1,200 people and resulted in 251 hostages being taken.

For the first time since the attack, the anniversary arrives with no hostages remaining in Gaza. All have been returned, either alive or deceased.

But that has not brought an end to the crisis. More than 74,000 Palestinians have been killed during Israel’s military campaign, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Much of Gaza has been destroyed. About 1.4 million people are expected to face high levels of acute food insecurity through December, according to the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, or IPC, assessment, and rebuilding has barely begun.

Despite a ceasefire reached nearly a year ago, Israeli strikes have continued, Hamas has not fully disarmed, Israeli forces still control roughly two-thirds of Gaza and negotiations over what ultimately happens to the territory remain stalled.
