In Brownsville, Texas, a deadly incident occurred when a driver plowed his car into a bus stop, killing eight people and injuring ten. The crash happened at 8:29 a.m. on Sunday near the Ozanam Center, a non-profit migrant and homeless shelter.

According to Brownsville Police Chief Felix Sauceda, the driver, identified as 34-year-old George Alvarez, faces manslaughter charges and is currently in custody.

Authorities are awaiting toxicology results and the FBI is investigating whether the crash was intentional with a possible extremist motive. The Department of Homeland Security is offering its full support and condolences to local leaders.

The tragic event comes amid escalating anti-immigrant policies in Texas and the Biden administration’s consideration of a new asylum ban. The American Civil Liberties Union expressed grief for the victims and concern over the potential motive, emphasizing the need for a more welcoming approach to migrants seeking protection in the U.S.
