The Trump administration has imposed sanctions on United Nations Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, who is tasked with documenting human rights abuses in Gaza, according to the Associated Press. The move marks the latest effort by the U.S. to punish critics of Israel’s 21-month-long war in the Palestinian territories.
Albanese has been outspoken about what she calls violations of international law. The U.S. previously tried and failed to pressure the United Nations into removing her. Now, instead of silencing her diplomatically, the administration is trying to do so economically.
It is not yet clear what the sanctions will mean in practice. What is clear is that the move comes the same week Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is in Washington for high-level talks with President Donald Trump about the war.
Critics say it is about shutting down accountability. Supporters claim it is about standing with Israel.
