The consummate Actor and Producer David Oyelowo is showing the same skill in his directorial debut of ‘The Waterman’. The film follows Gunner (Lonnie Chavis) who journeys on a quest to save his mother (Rosario Dawson) from Cancer by seeking out the mythic character ‘The Waterman’ which local legend says has power to magically evade death. Oyelowo’s character stops at nothing to bring his son back home. As the adventure becomes more dangerous the deeper Gunner goes into the forest, the more his father understands who his son is. Written by Emma Needell, the film stars David alongside Rosario Dawson, Maria Bello, Alfred Molina, Amiah Miller and Lonnie Chavis. The film gets a familiar quarantine rollout that includes Premium VOD and in theaters on May 7th via RIJE Films and an international Netflix release later this year.
‘The Waterman’ is a film that reflects Oyelowo’s vision and cultural direction and is evident with co-production by David’s company Yoruba Saxon Productions. David’s dream of bringing the essence of his favorite family adventure movies to a contemporary film was inspired by films like ‘The Goonies’, ‘E.T.’ and ‘The Never Ending Story’. The film is also produced by Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Films and ShivHans Pictures. Watch below as David talks the essence of making the film, his co-stars and a little bit of British racial history.
