(AURN News) — Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick will receive the Muhammad Ali Center’s Humanitarian of the Year award at a Nov. 7 ceremony in Louisville, according to Reuters.
The center said Kaepernick was chosen for his advocacy against racial injustice and his work supporting underserved communities through initiatives including his Know Your Rights Camp.
Kaepernick began kneeling during the national anthem in 2016 to protest police brutality and racial inequality, sparking a national debate and inspiring other athletes to demonstrate.
He last played in the NFL during the 2016 season and later reached a confidential settlement with the league after alleging that teams colluded to keep him unsigned because of his activism.
In a statement, Kaepernick honored Ali’s courage, saying, “To be recognized in his name is simultaneously humbling and a responsibility.”
