WASHINGTON (AURN News) — A whistleblower is warning that one scanning error could cause the Postal Service to reject an entire batch of mail-in ballots before they are sent to voters.
The anonymous federal official, represented by Whistleblower Aid, says USPS rushed development of a new system for checking ballot envelopes against voter lists and unique barcodes.
According to the disclosure released by Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., USPS plans to use a zero percent failure standard. That means if one barcode fails during a sample check, an entire shipment — possibly containing tens of thousands of ballots — could be returned to election officials for correction.
The whistleblower says the system was built in about three months without the normal testing process.
USPS and the White House had not provided detailed responses when the allegations were reported.
The plan is temporarily blocked, with a major court hearing scheduled for Sept. 3.
