WASHINGTON (AURN News) — With 29 days until the midterms, President Donald Trump is campaigning in Nebraska today before returning to Texas Wednesday, as elevated beef prices complicate his economic message.

The Associated Press reports Trump will rally supporters in San Antonio as Republicans work to maintain control of Congress in the midterm elections. His administration’s push to increase foreign beef imports aims to lower grocery bills, but American ranchers say cheaper imports could hurt their businesses.

Even Sen. Pete Ricketts, R-Neb., is urging the White House to change course and focus on rebuilding domestic cattle herds.

There’s another warning from cattle associations in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas. According to the Texas Tribune, the groups say immigration enforcement is disrupting workers and cattle shipments, potentially driving beef prices higher.

That leaves Trump facing competing demands. Consumers want lower food prices, while ranchers want policies that protect domestic production.
